Hip replacement surgery is done for Advance Hip arthritis and some Hip fractures in elderly. Being an important joint for locomotion, hip arthritis causes severe pain on walking and restricts activities of daily living. Hip arthritis may develop at any age because of several reasons.
The most common cause of Hip arthritis in younger age group is Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head (AVN). In AVN, the blood supply to head of femur is hampered leading to dead bone and collapse of spherical femoral head. There are several causes of AVN, one of which is old fracture neck of femur, in which blood supply to femoral head is damaged. But AVN can be seen without any obvious cause (i.e. idiopathic ) in most of the cases. Other common causes of developing Hip arthritis are Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Perthes disease etc.
In Hip replacement surgery, we replace the damaged femoral head and Acetabulum (i.e. socket in which femoral head rotates) with new smooth and frictionless surfaces to restore painfree full range of motion, limb length correction and normal walking pattern.
