Shoulder Replacement Surgery

  • Total Shoulder Replacement
  • Reverse Shoulder Replacement
  • Partial (Hemi) Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder replacement surgery is done in patients with shoulder arthritis. In shoulder arthritis, the movement of shoulder joint is restricted and painful because of degeneration. Major causes of developing shoulder arthritis are previous injury/fracture, chronic rotator cuff tear, rheumatoid arthritis etc.

In Total shoulder replacement surgery, we replace the worn out portions of Humerus head and Glenoid (i.e. socket in which humeral head rotates) with new smooth and frictionless surfaces to restore the painfree range of movement of shoulder joint.

The success of Shoulder replacement surgery largely depends on the quality and function of Rotator cuff muscles which drives this joint. If quality and strength of rotator cuff is poor, Reverse shoulder replacement surgery is done. In this, the humeral head is replaced with concave socket and glenoid is replaced with hemi-spherical surface. This construct drives on the power of Deltoid muscle of shoulder.
