Ankle arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that utilises a miniature camera and specialised instruments to diagnose and treat ankle-related conditions. This technique is used to examine the tissues inside or surrounding your ankle joint without the need for extensive incisions. As a result, patients often experience less pain and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.
Before the procedure, you may be given either general anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia. If you receive regional anaesthesia, your ankle and leg area will be numbed, and you may also receive sedatives to help you relax during the operation.
During the surgery, we will make a small incision in your ankle and insert the arthroscope, which is connected to a video monitor. We will then carefully examine all the tissues inside your ankle, including the bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Any damaged tissues are repaired using specialised instruments inserted through additional small incisions.
Once the surgery is complete, we will close the incisions with stitches and apply a dressing to the area. In some cases, we may need to perform open surgery if there is extensive damage that requires a larger incision to access the affected tissues.
Overall, ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that provides many benefits for patients who require ankle surgery. It allows for more precise diagnosis and treatment of ankle injuries while minimising the risks and recovery time associated with traditional open surgery.
